Our Story
In 1983, our founder Fred Hale walked into Colonial Lumber looking for materials for his home—only to find a sign that the company was going out of business.Rather than walk away, Fred saw opportunity. With a big vision, he purchased the business and reopened it as Colonial Building Supply on June 1, 1983, alongside six original employees. What began as a humble operation soon grew into a cornerstone of the Centerville community.
From the beginning, Fred’s mission was clear: build a business that treats contractors the way he would want to be treated—with honesty, efficiency, and real partnership. Over four decades later, that founding principle still guides everything we do.
We were among the first lumber yards in Utah to adopt computer systems, equip our fleet with piggyback forklifts, and introduce boom trucks to improve delivery logistics. Since then, we’ve expanded into a full-service door shop, drywall department, window and door installation, premium tools, and whole-home generator systems—all operating under one roof. This centralized model drives our commitment to fast, reliable service and clear communication.
A Minor Setback
In 2010, a fire destroyed our main building. “That doesn’t mean anything. We can rebuild,” said owner Fred Hale in an interview with KSL News following the fire. Read the full report here .
By the very next morning, we were operating out of a temporary mobile office. From there, we immediately began work on rebuilding. Thanks to the resilience of our team, the loyalty of our customers, and the overwhelming support of our community, what could’ve been a setback became a defining chapter in our history.
